Facebook unveiled the long-anticipated Libra project in June. Facebook intends to launch a cryptocurrency as a payment tool across global jurisdictions. However, several financial regulators have raised regulatory concerns over the Libra's ambition.
According to reporting agency Politico, Facebook has hired a former aide to assist in lobbying the company's cryptocurrency to the US Senate. Facebook has spent more than $7.5 millions on lobbying attempts this year. The company has a lobbying team consists of lobbying firms including the Sternhell Group, the Cypress Group and the law firm Davis Polk, all to work exclusively on the Libra issue. Also, some in-house lobbyists are working on the Libra.
Politico made a statement on Monday that Facebook has added Susan Zook of Mason Street Consulting, who previously assisted Senator Mike Crapo, to an entire team of lobbyists aiming to influence lawmakers on the Libra initiative.
Zook stated that she would be focusing on lobbying Senate Republicans. The news comes just weeks after the Senate Banking Committee held a hearing over Facebook's controversial Libra cryptocurrency and raised questions about its privacy, data protection, and anti-money laundering issues. The blockchain lead of the firm, David Marcus is the one who attended the hearing.
Facebook also reportedly hired Edward Bowles, who was a former senior bank lobbyist from Standard Chartered focusing on group public and regulatory affairs.
