North Korea attacked the cryptocurrency exchange for Weapons of Mass Destruction(WMD). Suspicions have arisen that North Korea is taking bribes by conducting cyberattacks on foreign financial institutions and cryptocurrency exchanges. More than 60 percent of North Korea's targets are exchanges in South Korea.
North Korea has conducted 35 cyberattacks against financial institutions and cryptocurrency exchanges in at least 17 countries between December 2015 and May this year. An estimation of the number of stolen goods will be worth up to $2 billion U.S. dollars for its WMD.
The report shows that targets include South Korea, India, Chile, and Nigeria. In particular, It seems that attacks are concentrated on cryptocurrency exchanges recently. Since 2017 alone, there have been 15 cryptocurrency exchange attacks believed to have been committed by North Korea, with 10 of them targeting exchanges in South Korea.
Compared with financial institutions, North Korea's cyberattacks concentrate on cryptocurrency exchanges, which are relatively difficult to track for attacks and the government's lax monitoring.
