World Economic forum considers Blockchain as a significant technology of 4th Industrial Revolution and the developement of digital economy. The forum defines blocchian as a provider of an immutable record of transactions performed across a network without the need to rely on an intermediary, such as a central bank.

World Economic forum's definition and views on blockchain is based on the views of experts from the World Economic Forum’s Expert Network and is curated in partnership with Professor William Knottenbelt and Dr Catherine Mulligan, Director and Associate Director of the Centre for Cryptocurrency Research and Engineering, Imperial College London.

According to them, "Blockchain is a concept that brings together economics and digital technologies in a way that was never before conceived. Blockchain enables not just new means by which to deliver financial services and support cryptocurrencies, but can also reshape and redefine government, legal services, accounting, insurance, supply chains, and energy distribution".
